OUR ORIGIN & MISSION

Built for those who wish to break free.

We created the FTG workplace compatibility test to move past surface-level resume checklists and help dynamic generalists find where they truly flourish.

A LETTER FROM THE FOUNDER

Why We Built Free The Generalist

Dear fellow generalist,

The Spark: A Decade of Agility

Like many generalists, I've always found it difficult to fit neatly into one box. Over the first decade of my career, I worked across different roles, teams, and problems. I enjoyed figuring things out, learning new things, and bringing different perspectives together. I loved the options being a generalist afforded me.

But when I decided to take a half-year career break to explore new industries and hunt for my next big adventure, I hit a massive brick wall.

The Question That Doesn't Get Asked Enough

As I scrolled through countless job descriptions, I noticed a frustrating pattern. Most job listings looked the same: a rigid checklist of hard skills and specific past experiences.

There was no way to filter or search for jobs based on the type of problems I like to solve, or the type of work culture I naturally thrive in.

Can you do the job?

Have you done something similar before?

Do you have the right qualifications?

All useful questions, but I kept wondering about another one: Is this the environment in which I will do my best work?

The Epiphany

I started to wonder how much more we might all flourish if we could be matched to a workplace that plays to our innate strengths.

The idea became even clearer through conversations with people around me. I've spoken to incredibly capable and hardworking people who felt deeply frustrated, stuck, or unrecognised at work. Often, they weren't lacking ambition or ability. They just hadn't found the conditions that brought out their best.

That stayed with me.

I started thinking about what it would look like to give people a clearer language for understanding themselves at work — not just what they're good at, but how they naturally approach problems, make decisions, collaborate, and create.

And that's where Free The Generalist began.

To all those out there who have ever felt constrained in a box, I hope we can find the courage to break free, discover where we truly thrive, and carve out career paths that feel uniquely our own.

As a highly introspective person, this search for true compatibility has always guided my own career choices, and I’ve been fortunate to find workplaces that genuinely uplifted me both personally and professionally. I sincerely hope Free The Generalist will unlock that same door for you.

Warmly,

The Founder
